After 78 years in business, food storage industry icon Tupperware has filed for bankruptcy. According to a statement released by the company, Tupperware Brands Corporation announced the company "voluntarily initiated Chapter 11 proceedings in the United States Bankruptcy Court" as of Wednesday.

Tupperware was created in Leominster in the 1940s by local chemist Earl S. Tupper. At that time, Leominster was home to a booming plastics industry, including the Viscoloid Company, founded in 1901, which made toys out of pyroxylin plastic.
