Astronomers have reported that Earth will have two natural satellites for nearly two months, from September 29 to November 25. In addition to the Moon, asteroid 2024 PT5, known as a minimoon, will also be moving around our planet.

PT5 will orbit Earth briefly from September 29 to November 25, 2024, acting as a mini moon. It was discovered in August 2024 and will travel in a semi-orbit around Earth before returning to its sun-centered orbit.

The newly discovered asteroid, named 2024 PT5, will temporarily be captured by Earth’s gravity and orbit our world from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25, according to astronomers. Then, the space rock will return to a heliocentric orbit, which is an orbit around the sun.

The asteroid is expected to make a “horseshoe path” around Earth over the next two months, researchers wrote in a recent study. After it completes its mini-moon episode, it will stick around Earth’s neighborhood until January.

It won't be there forever, but Earth will have a second moon when a small asteroid begins to orbit the planet later this month, space researchers have announced.
