It is the first time in recent memory that a House Speaker was defeated in a primary in Delaware. Smith is unopposed in November's general election. Smith defeated Longhurst by 180 votes on the Sept. 10 primary. Longhurst held the office and represented District 15, in Bear, for almost 20 years. Her term ends on Nov. 5.
