For crops unable to tolerate high chloride contents, potassium sulfate (K2SO 4) is the common alternative fertilizer. This has 50% K content but also contains 16% sulfur (S). KCl comes in both granular and powder forms, but for ease of application, the granular form is preferred.

Sulphate of Potash (SOP) fertiliser provides both potassium and sulphur in a soluble form. SOP contains no chloride and hence has a much lower salt index than MOP.
