Best tools for relief carving? - Woodcarving Illustrated
Carpenter's tools = 30 degrees included bevel. Wood carving tools = 20 degrees included bevel angle. Wood carving knives = 12-15 degrees. I don't understand the reluctance to admit what the most useful bevel angles really are. Without that, you can screw up the most expensive of steels and wonder why. Brian T.

I have had mine for over a year now, continue to enjoy them and find them comparable to Pfeil and other "high-end" (price, not necessarily better quality) tool manufacturers.

Sep 5, 2021 · Flexcuts are good too. I made chip carving knives using utility knife blades. The blades are thin, flexible, and they're cheap and easy to make for what you want. I have used a kevlar glove for many, many years and as per my cousin, an instructor, I wrap my index and middle finger with numerous wraps (MANY) of masking tape to help prevent mini punctures. Gloves with weaves need this to keep knife points out. NYRich.

Aug 27, 2011 · The gouges you might find useful would depend a lot on the size of the carvings. If your carvings are 100mm tall, then I'd recommend gouges such as a #3-6mm, #5-6mm, and a 6mm V tool would be a start. I'd also recommend full-sized gouges, not palm tools. If you carvings are 250mm tall, then you could go to #3-10mm, #5-10mm, and a 6mm V tool.
