Hatfields and McCoys, two American Appalachian mountaineer families who, with their kinfolk and neighbours, engaged in a legendary feud that attracted nationwide attention in the 1880s and ’90s and prompted judicial and police actions, one of which drew an appeal up to the U.S. Supreme Court (1888).

    Some say the feud dates to Civil War days, when some members of the families took opposite sides. It grew into disputes over timber rights and land in the 1870s, and gained more notoriety in 1878, when Randolph or ``Old Randal″ McCoy accused a Hatfield of stealing one of his pigs. The hostilities left at least a dozen dead.

    The feud all began in 1864 when Confederate soldiers William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield and Jim Vance, cousin of Devil Anse, murdered former Union soldier Asa Harmon McCoy because they believed McCoy was responsible for the shooting of a friend of his during the war.

    Three of Randolph McCoy’s sons ended up in a violent dispute with two brothers of Devil Anse. The fight soon snowballed into chaos as one of the McCoy brothers stabbed Ellison Hatfield multiple times and then shot him in the back. Authorities soon apprehended the McCoys, but the Hatfields interceded, spiriting the men to Hatfield territory.
