Relatively little is known about the origins of the Vietnamese people. They first appeared in history as the so-called “Lac” peoples, who lived in the Red River delta region, in what is now northern Vietnam.
But by 300 B.C., the people in this region seem to be divided into Tay Au (Vietnamese of the highlands) and Lac Viet (Vietnamese of the plains).
